I came to Vic Chesnutt through R.E.M. They appeared on a tribute album for him, Sweet Relief II: The Gravity of the Situation. He’d fall in and out of my consciousness for a few years, although returned again in recent years. When Cowboy Junkies re-recorded their seminal The Trinity Session, Chesnutt was one of the guest musicians. He appears in several songs, but it’s his singing on “Dreaming My Dreams with You” that is absolutely perfect for Trinity Revisited.
Hersh wrote a lovely eulogy for him, in which she says, “I saw him as unassailable—huge and wonderful”. And he was, even if he never knew it.
